Debate over business deck expansion comes to a head
The two sides sparring over the controversial deck expansion to the Pacific Beach Shore Club presented their cases at the monthly general membership meeting of the Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) in July. Now, an advisory vote rests in the hands of the PBTC general membership.
A ballot was mailed out this month with the PBTC newsletter to gauge support and opposition within the business and residential community. Ballots are due Sept. 8.
The rift developed in April when PBTC President Rose Galliher wrote a letter of support for the project to the San Diego Police Department on behalf of the PBTC board.

Beach area graffiti to be addressed
PACIFIC BEACH — Officer Alan Alvarez with the San Diego Police Department spoke about graffiti during the Pacific Beach Town Council's Aug. 18 meeting.
“It doesn’t necessarily have to be gangs doing the graffiti,” Alvarez said of misconceptions about graffiti.
Graffiti is often spray painted in the form of a signature and this signature is referred to as a tag. If the police are able to collect many examples of one particular tag, or signature graffiti, the suspect can be charged with more counts, possibly making the offense greater, Alvarez explained.
He emphasized how important it is for the public to report vandalism such as graffiti.

Campland’s outreach helping homeless youth
PACIFIC BEACH — Campland on the Bay has always provided refuge for tourists on the shore of Mission Bay. Now, the local resort is raising money to help local homeless youth.
“Campland is pretty community-minded and we have such a good relationship with our guests that we thought it would be a perfect match,” said Kim McAnally, Campland spokesperson. “A lot of our return guests are really loyal to us and we thought getting them involved with a project that benefits the interests of children and youth would work.”
Starting in late June, Campland began inviting guests to add $1 to their bill to benefit the locally-based Homeless Youth Outreach Project. The donations are voluntary.

California Vehicle Code 22651k dictates that a vehicle cannot be parked in the same location on any city street for more than 72 hours — or it can be impounded.
72-hour street parking in same location: move it or you might lose it
PACIFIC BEACH — Jake Kattai has a convenient life. The seven-year Pacific Beach resident lives four blocks from the ocean and walks three blocks to work. He can purchase most of what he needs inside the parameters of Pacific Beach, which means he rarely has the need to drive his car.
In fact, Kattai prefers to walk or ride his bicycle most places.
Although his father is a police officer in central California, Kattai, like many residents, discovered one law the hard way.

Discover PB looks to tourism to bolster summer business
As temperatures start to rise in Pacific Beach, more and more tourists will flock to the area. Discover PB is hoping the summer will bring local businesses a boost.
“Summertime is a time where businesses are really focused on tourists and trying to make the most of the busy tourist season,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the area’s business improvement district. “We’re hoping for better things this season and what we’re hearing, at least from the hotel side, is that things are picking up.”
With Discover PB’s major events happening in the fall, the organization is counting on the sunshine to bring more business to PB. During the summer, Discover PB will promote the area heavily.
