San Diego’s Sushi Performance and Visual Art organization is celebrating 30 years of presenting alternative contemporary arts in San Diego.

In accordance, Sushi, located at 390 11th Ave., will hold its annual fund- raising event, the Red Ball, this year on June 5 from 7 to 11 p.m. The evening will be filled with art, performance, music, installations, great food, libations and, as always, interesting people.

Patrick Stewart, the executive director of Sushi, expects about 300 attendees this year.

“Sushi is the premier performance art place in San Diego,” he said. “This is Sushi’s signature fund-raising event. We are celebrating our 30th anniversary and we will be reviewing the past years and performances throughout the night … and we will have plenty of artifacts from the past on hand to contemplate.”

Stewart said the space will not be set up in any conventional fashion.

“This is not going to be a traditional, stuffy sit down gala, but a cutting-edge, challenging and entertaining ‘outside the box’ event,” he said. “People are going to see something new and different this night.”

Regarding accommodations, Stewart said, “It will mostly be a standing event with some seating and roped off space outside on 10th and J streets. Food will be self-served buffet style on china.”

Instead of a traditional master of ceremonies, Sushi will feature a busker, who, like a performance artist, will rove or prowl around and mingle with the crowd and make announcements and introduce acts from all around the house.

New proposed central library is still inching closer to reality PDF Print E-mail

A plan to build a nine-story central library at Park Boulevard and J Street moved one step closer to fruition April 30 when the builder agreed to proceed with the project at the same cost it had originally estimated in 2005.

When library and city officials met with Turner Construction about the project in 2005, the company estimated expenses of $145 million for construction and approximately $40 million for architecture and engineering fees, furniture and fixtures. The City Council declined to approve the project until the library system had secured enough funding to build the new facility, said Marion Moss Hubbard, San Diego Public Library’s public information officer.

Since that time, the library has garnered approximately $148.5 million from several sources: $80 million from the Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC), $28.5 million from San Diego Public Library Foundation, $20 million from California State Library and $20 million from the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), which is part of a 40-year lease agreement for a charter school that will be housed on the new facility’s sixth and seventh floors, Moss Hubbard said.

Encanto artist Roman de Salvo has been selected to provide a public work of art as part of the Unified Port of San Diego’s upcoming Ruocco Park, scheduled for construction in 2011 along the waterfront between Harbor Drive and Pacific Highway.

Still in the early stages of his design for the piece, de Salvo said he’s spent the last month researching this “dream project.”

“It is exactly the kind of thing for an artist of my sensibility, and to get this one is really what my purpose is as an artist,” de Salvo said. “I see it as an opportunity to bring my imagination and innovative sensibility and inspiration, and infuse that into this park … Hopefully it will be a delight for the citizenry.”

It is possible that no other musician has made as big an impact on San Diego as the late Jim Croce, who passed away in 1973. He is practically synonymous with downtown thanks to his namesake restaurant, Croce’s, opened by his wife, Ingrid Croce, in 1985. Meanwhile, his music is still heard on radio, TV and in movies. Such classics as “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” have been covered by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Dolly Parton, making them an indelible part of America’s pop culture.

Recently, Ingrid published a new, 190-page book, “Anthology,” detailing the stories behind 40 of Jim Croce’s best-loved tunes. With full music and lyrics included, and lots of rare photographs, it’s the ultimate book for Croce aficionados.

Though “Anthology” was only recently issued by music publishing giant Hal Leonard, the seeds of the project go back more than 30 years to Ingrid’s days on the East Coast folk circuit. Listening to other performers made her realize there were two tales within a piece of music: “Not just in the song, but also about how the song was written. I always thought this would be interesting to others,” she said.

The opening of Croce’s 25 years ago confirmed that thought.

“Over the years, people came up and told me things like, ‘I’ve always loved this song, what did he write it about?’”

In today’s special interest society, is it possible for citizens to come together to do something as monumental as the creation of Balboa Park and the 1915 Panama Exposition?

Seems unlikely, but a past generation’s vision and grit appear to be inspiring a new generation of San Diegans to think big. Politicians and civic-minded citizens are talking about producing world-class multi-year events celebrating the 1915 Panama Exposition. A centerpiece would be to banish parking from Balboa Park’s Plaza de Panama and make it a major gathering place for the celebration and other events.

In his State of the City address, Mayor Jerry Sanders said this year is the 100th anniversary of the naming of the city’s jewel, Balboa Park. In his speech he recalled how a city with a population that today wouldn’t sell out a Padre game transformed an expanse of raw land into a world-class treasure that generations have enjoyed.
