Residents of Coronado will be asked for the third time in 22 years if they support building a tunnel to relieve traffic congestion between the Coronado Bridge and North Island Naval Air Base, according to the Union-Tribune. A measure will be put on the June ballot that will decide whether the city should drop the plans altogether or move forward with the project.

Changes to the way Coronado approves historically-significant homes for state preservation are being considered, reported the Union-Tribune. The state Mills Act provides tax relief to homeowners in the program. While Coronado's City Council election remains undecided, candidate Barbara Denny was leading last night and unofficial results at midnight showed her the winner with 42.6 percent of the votes, reported the Union-Tribune and eCoronado.com. Phil Monroe was behind her, with 35.5 percent of the votes, and Jerry Mitchell came in last with 21.9 percent. Denny and Monroe both ran for mayor in November, and are now running to fill the vacant seat left by Casey Tanaka, who won the mayoral election. The council term ends in November 2010. Denny ran as a fiscal conservative, while former councilman Monroe pledged to build and protect the city's reserves.

Coronado study released on bridge tolls PDF Print E-mail
San Diego Cities - Coronado

Monday, 20 April 2009 15:35
On Friday, Coronado city officials released an analysis on reinstituting tolls on the Coronado bridge to help alleviate the city's traffic problem, reported the Union-Tribune. Set at $1.50 each direction, tolls could raise an additional $140 million over a four-year period, the study found.  Rates may be raised to $2.50 to $5 each way in 2019.  Tolls could help cover the cost of a proposed one-mile tunnel from the bridge to North Island Naval Air Station, which is one of several traffic relief problems studied over the last decade. The city commissioned the toll study while completing an environmental review of traffic-relief proposals. Tomorrow, the City Council will review the draft study and, if approved, forward it to the Navy, state Department of Transportation and the San Diego Association of Governments for comment.

Today, Coronado city officials will hold a panel to discuss possibly reinstituting tolls on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge to provide funds for long-discussed traffic improvements, reported the Union-Tribune. A possible underwater tunnel project has been proposed in the past to alleviate traffic from the marine base.  Coronado last collected tolls from the bridge in 2002.
